“Property Taxes” and the Consent of the Governed

Originally posted on http://FreeKeene.com

What is the nature of this organization of people calling themselves the “government”? Is it based in consent, as their own founding documents claim? Or are they actually a group of men and women doing business by the threat of violence? The latter is what most of the people I associate with believe, but which is the truth? Earlier this year, I ventured into a similar area when I questioned the government people over a parking ticket. You can read parts one and two of that here. (Eventually, I will write a part three when time permits!)

So, now we begin a new saga into the world of “property taxes”.

"Fridays Are For Music" in Downtown Keene

My family and I enjoyed some good music last night in Railroad Square. The Keene Music Festival (http://keenemusicfestival.com) hosts bands every Friday evening leading up to their big annual event, Saturday August 30th from 10am-10pm, when they shut down mainstreet and set up multiple stages all around.

(Two members of the band, Shadwell)

Last evening the weather was perfect for a small but gathering crowd to enjoy two bands. At about 5:30pm "Shadwell" (http://shadwellsong.com) played some good rock music for an hour, as the children started to dance and the early downtown crowds passed by before committing to a location for the evening. I enjoyed their music, which was almost entirely original. They are a five piece band based in Boston and will be back for the Festival.

Keene, NH May 12, 2008 -- New Hampshire College students and local activists have organized a one-day symposium, entitled, "Family Members, Researchers and Whistleblowers Speak Out", to be held at Keene High School on Saturday, May 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. "This symposium has been put together by undergraduate student scholars -- a group of young people committed to the pursuit of truth in a country that so often substitutes the comfortable life and easy paths over the rocky roads of ethical personhood," says O'Connor, who along with Bob McIlvaine, who lost his son Bobby, and Michele Little, who lost her firefighter brother David, will be making presentations at the symposium.

Keene Police Ignore Illegal Gambling Operation

By Kat Kanning

Activists from http://freekeene.com attended the Keene Freedom Fest to engage in civil disobedience aimed at gambling laws. These activists believe that victimless “crimes” should not be illegal. So several people came together to play dice and card games for money. Free Keene's Ian Bernard said, “Gambling is both a personal and economic freedom issue. I can decide for myself how to spend and save my money, and I don't appreciate being threatened with a jail cell over my choices.”

Parking Tickets and the “Consent of the Governed”

By Ian Bernard
http://freekeene.com
http://freetalklive.com

There’s been a theory floating around America for the past couple hundred years suggesting that government people gain their power and legitimacy via the “consent of the governed”. As I understand it, in the world of Legal Land, it is commonly held that silence is tantamount to consent. In that, if the government people demand something of you and you either comply or say nothing that you are consenting to their rule over you.
